Making Resolutions: There's Good News and Bad - Quick Tip - 12/16/09

This is the time of year when many people start thinking of changing their habits - you know, out with the old, in with the new. While this is admirable, there are some things you need to know.

First, the bad news...it's not easy to change a habit, even if you are highly motivated.

Not to get too technical, but this is because your brain has formed strong synapses for the habitual behavior. This is like the grooves carved into a music record (remember those?) during recording. No matter how much you want to, you will never get a new song out of that record.

Now for the good news...you can make a new record with the song you want on it and play that instead. In other words, instead of trying to change an old habit, create an entirely new one to take its place.

In this way, your brain will be forming new synapses that are not tied to the old habit.

Three Ways to a Stressless Holiday - Quick Tip - 12/09/09

Are you getting so stressed that you can't enjoy the holidays. With holiday parties to plan,decorations to put up, gifts to buy, travel arrangements to make, its no wonder that this happy time is also extremely stressful.

Here are three tips to lower your stress.

1. Don't try to be perfect.

If you expect perfection, you are asking for stress. You don't have to buy the perfect gift, cook the perfect meal, have a perfectly clean house. So, aim for reasonable goals and not perfection in your holiday plans.

2. Ask for help.

If you try to do it all yourself, you are asking for stress. Ask others to help you wrap gifts, cook, decorate, etc. It's more fun working together and makes others feel like they are contributing.

3. Get enough sleep. 

Burning the midnight oil to get things done will add to your stress. A good nights sleep will help you get more done during the day, and make your holiday chores more pleasant.

Homemade Christmas

For Christmas, I invite all 5 managers and their families, including kids, to my home and I cook a full Christmas dinner for all of them. 

I have my husband dress up as Santa and we give the kids each a Christmas present. We also give each manager a Christmas gift.

We always have a great time at these parties. The managers really appreciate all the attention they get. 

I also send cards for every holiday to our company stores for the employees and to the managers' homes. 

This helps make us more like family than co-workers.

Wrap It Up

We had a wrapping night last year before Christmas.

Staff brought their presents and paper to work one night, we played holiday music, and had a raffle for a $10.00 gift card to Target.

There was laughter, carols sung, and staff bonding.

Everyone loved it and had such a fun time. Plus, we got our presents wrapped without distractions at home. We have decided that this will be an annual event.
