An idea I have been incorporating into summer for several years is an All Staff Birthday Party.
Trying to remember treats and cards for everyone's special day had become a hassle. Invariably someone was forgotten or slighted on the time or treat due to schedules. So, this is what we do instead...
Twice a year we get together for a social event outside of the office that includes spouses or another person of choice.
Summer
In August, we do an All Staff Birthday Party that includes an outside activity and a meal.
This year we are going to a miniature golf course. In past years, we have done a
- Dinner theater
- Boat cruise
- Picnic.
This gives spouses, boy/girl friends, or even a family member a chance to meet the co-workers. Of course, we have cake and ice cream and lots of laughs and stories.
Winter
In February, we do a winter celebration that replaces our Christmas party. My philosophy is everyone is so busy around the holidays that another party becomes work rather than fun.
By having our other birthday party in February, it gives something to look forward to at a dreary time of year.
I make it clear that during the year if people want to bring in treats for a co-worker that is their choice, but the company supports the -All Staff Birthday- as our recognition for everyone.
On the actual day of each person's birthday, I mail a birthday card, to their home address, with a handwritten note thanking them for their contribution to the company, and expressing how much I enjoy working with them.
